Gingivitis

Gingivitis is a moderate form of periodontal disease caused by bacterial infection.

THE CAUSES OF GINGIVITIS

Gingivitis is an infection of the gums. The cause is a bacterial infection of the gums. Bacteria colonise the gum/dent junction, triggering inflammation of the gums. Gingivitis often results from a combination of factors, including poor oral hygiene, genetic predisposition, behaviours such as smoking, underlying medical conditions and hormonal fluctuations.

THE SYMPTOMS OF GINGIVITIS

Healthy gums are not subject to bleeding or pain. Its normal colour is light pink.

The first signs that should alert you are as follows:

  • Bleeding gums;
  • Swollen gums;
  • Tender gums;
  • Bad breath;
  • Gum pain.

It’s not enough for gums to look healthy – gingivitis can develop quietly. It is difficult to diagnose gingivitis without a thorough examination.

When symptoms appear, the disease has already reached an advanced stage.
It is crucial to stress the importance of annual dental check-ups by a professional to monitor oral health.

THE CONSEQUENCES OF GINGIVITIS

Untreated gingivitis can lead to periodontitis and loosening of the teeth.

In addition to the discomfort and bad breath it can cause, gingivitis can lead to other, more serious pathologies. It is therefore essential to consult a periodontist if you have any symptoms, and also to have regular periodontal check-ups to detect gingivitis that is developing at a low level.

TREATMENTS

We opt for a complete periodontal approach: prevention, cure and monitoring to avoid recurrence.

We therefore stress the importance of regular periodontal check-ups to avoid waiting until the symptoms of gingivitis appear. Treatment is based on LASER techniques and is recommended following a periodontal check-up.

The periodontal assessment is carried out as follows:

  • Interview between the patient and the practitioner to find out about your history, habits and risk factors;
  • Microscopic examination of the dental plaque, which will be analysed and interpreted immediately to identify any pathogenic bacteria and their extent;
  • We’ll provide you with a report and a tailor-made estimate if necessary.

If gingivitis is confirmed during a periodontal check-up, the treatment involves deep disinfection and debridement of the pockets (lithotripsy). The dental surgeon carries out the following completely painless procedures:

Disinfection and debridement of the pockets using LASER to eliminate bacteria, parasites and tartar deposits lodged in the periodontal pockets.
Development of a personalised prevention and daily hygiene programme to maintain dental capital and the benefits of treatment.

RESULTS OF TREATMENT FOR GINGIVITIS

The ultimate goal of treatment is to restore the health of the periodontium, the supporting structure of the teeth, by eliminating inflammation and promoting healing of the gum tissue. By maintaining proper oral hygiene, patients can prevent the recurrence of gingivitis, thus contributing to a healthy periodontium and a mouth free from complications associated with gingival inflammation.
