Tooth rage

Toothache, or “dental pulpitis”, is the inflammation of the pulp, the inner part of the tooth containing the nerves and blood vessels. It is a common condition that causes acute and often pulsating pain in the affected tooth. It can have a variety of causes.

THE CAUSES OF TOOTHACHE

Toothache manifests itself violently for a variety of reasons, and the expertise of a dental surgeon is needed to suggest the right treatment. There are a number of possible causes of toothache, including :

  • tooth decay;
  • dental trauma;
  • damage to the pulp as a result of major or faulty dental work;
  • a wisdom tooth that tears the gum tissue;
  • an accumulation of food debris between the teeth;
  • gum infection;
  • a dental abscess.

Poor dental hygiene, smoking and alcohol consumption, as well as irregular oral care, increase the risk of exposure to pulpitis.

Pulpitis is said to be reversible when the inflammation is treated definitively, and irreversible when the inflammation becomes chronic despite treatment.

SYMPTOMS OF DENTAL INFLAMMATION

In the early stages of the condition, pulpitis may go unnoticed if there are no symptoms. Symptoms appear when the inflammation affects the entire pulp. The main symptoms are

  • very strong localised pain ;
  • pain spreading to the ear, jaw, neck and sinuses;
  • pain intensified by contact with hot and/or cold;
  • headaches;
  • in the case of abscesses, a metallic taste in the mouth, painful swelling of the cheek and moderate fever.

These symptoms are generally aggravated by lying down.

TREATMENTS TO RELIEVE TOOTHACHE

To relieve a toothache, three complementary elements are necessary:

  • prescription of painkillers to relieve the pain ;
  • antibiotics to fight the infection;
  • treating the specific causes and possible complications of pulpitis.

At Clinique Dentaire Sana Oris, we stress the importance of an annual check-up to identify the problems that may be causing toothache, and to treat them before symptoms appear.

This consultation is an integral part of the treatment, as it allows us to prevent rather than cure, and to establish with the patient a brushing and oral health maintenance ritual that is essential for maintaining dental capital.

RESULTS OF TREATMENT FOR DENTAL INFLAMMATION

In the case of reversible pulpitis, treatment eliminates all symptoms and the pulp recovers its full functionality.

However, in the case of irreversible pulpitis, the inflammation remains. It is possible to opt for a pulpectomy to prevent any risk of abscess, or even extraction of the tooth in the most complex cases.

The different specialities of our dentists, particularly in the field of exclusive periodontics, offer you a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to the causes and treatment of pulpitis.

THE COST OF TREATMENT TO RELIEVE TOOTHACHE

The cost of treating a toothache is set by your dental surgeon according to the problem encountered and the procedure required.
