Our reception staff are trained to recognise the seriousness of the emergency in a few questions.

What are the different types of dental emergencies?

There are three main types of dental emergencies treated by the Sana Oris multidisciplinary team.

  • Acute pain that does not subside after taking a painkiller is the most frequent emergency, sometimes with a stabbing pain that is difficult to bear. This is the traditional “toothache”, with two main causes:
    • pulpitis, an inflammation of the inside of the tooth, the pulp, located in the root canal.
    • Abscesses of soft tissues (gum, alveolar bone), with general risks. The abscess can even break through into the mouth, with brutal elimination of the pus in the oral cavity.
  • Dental trauma results in the loss of a tooth or a broken tooth, with the risk of further damage to the nerve or soft tissue. While it is necessary to act very quickly on a tooth expulsion, the urgency is somewhat less on a crown or an orthodontic appliance.
  • Hemorrhage is uninterrupted dental bleeding, most often after dental extraction.

What to do in case of a dental emergency?

In case of a dental emergency during the day, you can contact us by phone at 01 82 73 14 00. We will do everything possible to receive and treat you the same day: our receptionists are trained to assess the seriousness of the emergency through a few questions, linked to both the nature of the symptoms and the intensity of the pain you are experiencing.

Outside of opening hours, you should contact the nearest on-call service specialized in dentistry or stomatology.

On site, we place great emphasis on pain management.

What to do for a toothache (dental abscess and pulpitis)?

1 – While waiting for the appointment, it is possible to take a painkiller already prescribed by a health professional, such as paracetamol or codeine paracetamol.
Applying external cold to an abscess can also relieve the pain.
Aspirin and ibuprofen should be avoided as they can increase the risk of bleeding.
The use of a broad-spectrum antibiotic is recommended only on medical advice.

2 – In an emergency, your Sana Oris practitioner will immediately perform a clinical examination and an X-ray check-up. High definition medical imaging allows for an immediate and precise diagnosis.

In the case of pulpitis, a pulpotomy will be performed to remove sensitive tissues inside the tooth, including nerve structures, before placing a temporary filling.

Once the lesions have stabilized, a specific endodontic treatment such as root canal therapy will be performed. Sana Oris has an exclusive endodontic specialist dedicated to the most complex cases.

In the case of a dental abscess, your practitioner may debride the abscess and apply appropriate antibiotic therapy.
Once the infection has stabilized, the diseased tooth must be treated, either by trying to preserve it or by removing it (extraction of wisdom teeth for example).

Thanks to its 5 specialists dedicated to exclusive periodontology, including Dr. Kohen, a pioneer in France, the Sana Oris team has real expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of soft and hard tissue infections of the mouth.

What to do about toothache (abscess and pulpitis)?

1 – While waiting for the appointment, it is possible to take a painkiller already prescribed by a health professional, such as paracetamol or codeine paracetamol.

Applying external cold to an abscess can also relieve pain.

However, aspirin and ibuprofen should be avoided as they can increase the risk of bleeding.

Broad-spectrum antibiotics should only be taken on medical advice.

2 -On the spot, your Sana Oris practitioner will immediately carry out a clinical examination and an X-ray check-up. This will allow a precise diagnosis of the situation to be made immediately.

  • For a pulpitis, A pulpotomy will be performed by removing the sensitive tissues located inside the tooth, particularly the nerve structures, before placing a temporary filling.
Once the lesions have stabilised, a specific endodontic treatment such as devitalisation can be carried out.
Clinique Dentaire Sana Oris has an exclusive endodontic specialist dedicated to the most complex cases.
  • for a dental abscess, the therapeutic protocol will depend on the type of abscess (periapical or pardonable) and the stage of its progress. In both cases a drainage of the abscess will be necessary and may be accompanied by a root canal treatment (devitalization), or even a tooth extraction.
Once the first treatment has been given, antibiotic treatment may also be proposed, as well as a thorough periodontal treatment.

With 5 specialists dedicated to exclusive periodontology, including Dr Kohen, a pioneer in this specialty in France, the Sana Oris team has extensive expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of soft and hard tissue infections of the mouth.

What to do in case of dental trauma or on a prosthesis?

1 – While waiting for the appointment, it is imperative to recover the tooth and rinse it, always holding it by the crown and never by the root. You should not hesitate to replace it while waiting if you can, being careful not to swallow it.
Otherwise, it should be kept, ideally in physiological saline, or failing that, in just-opened UHT milk.
2 – On site, your Sana Oris specialist will then carry out a complete examination, with the use of medical imaging if necessary.
Sana Oris’ complete technical platform allows for immediate and complete treatment.

  • If the dental pulp is not affected, your Sana Oris specialist can glue the piece back together or reconstruct the tooth using a specific composite resin. Thanks to our in-house laboratory, we can guarantee a prosthesis made in France and of the same color, for an optimal aesthetic result.
  • If the dental pulp is affected, it is often necessary to consider a root canal and the subsequent fitting of a dental prosthesis.
  • If the impact is on a prosthesis or orthodontic device, a follow-up visit should be considered, but the urgency is not as great.

It is also important to check the integrity of the gums.

In all cases, the subsequent care to be planned will be the subject of a precise and customized estimate, which your practitioner will give you along with the report of the emergency care.

How to prevent a toothache?

Dental infections are often caused by a lack of hygiene and prevention.
We notice an important part of abscesses or pulpitis in patients who are afraid of the dentist, leading them to neglect an annual preventive check-up. However, it is this regular dental check-up that often prevents periodontal damage, which can lead to abscesses, or dental damage, which can lead to pulpitis.
We offer you customized prevention protocols, adapted to your age and the state of your teeth, all in an atmosphere of serenity and trust. Through this appointment, each patient can benefit from our expertise in exclusive periodontics and endodontics.
