Broken tooth

A broken tooth is noticeable and can lead to complexes. They can be corrected by dental surgery. You should consult a dentist to assess the consequences of a broken tooth, which may go beyond the cosmetic aspect.

THE DIFFERENT CAUSES OF A BROKEN TOOTH

A fall or a more or less violent impact involving contact between the tooth and an external element can cause partial or total loss of the crown.

It is also possible for a tooth to break in the event of :

  • intense grinding due to repeated friction of the enamel ;
  • intense and violent clenching which, under the force of the jaw muscles, breaks the tooth (known as clenching);
  • the tooth is not properly embedded in the opposite jaw, leading to repeated shocks that eventually break the tooth.

HOW IS A BROKEN TOOTH TREATED?

Depending on the severity of the injury, different treatments may be offered to restore the tooth:

Composite care: if the tooth is slightly fractured or chipped, a filling can be used to repair the damaged part of the tooth using a filling material such as a composite resin.

Dental crown: when the tooth is badly broken or weakened, a dental crown may be necessary. A crown is a dental prosthesis that completely covers the tooth to restore its shape, function and appearance.

Veneer: For cosmetic damage, a porcelain or resin dental veneer may be used. The veneer is placed on the front surface of the tooth to improve its appearance and hide imperfections.

Endodontics: if the broken tooth has also damaged the dental pulp (nerve), root canal treatment may be necessary. This involves removing the infected or damaged pulp and then filling and sealing the root canals to prevent further infection.

THE RISKS OF NOT TREATING A BROKEN TOOTH

It is essential to consult a dental surgeon when a tooth breaks, even if there is no pain at the time of impact or afterwards. A number of complications could result from an untreated broken tooth, such as infection or damage to the tongue.

THE RESULTS YOU CAN EXPECT AFTER TREATING A BROKEN TOOTH

The results of composite treatment, veneers, crowns and endodontics are all natural and almost imperceptible. Regular check-ups with your dentist will ensure that these solutions last and can be adapted if necessary.
