What are the different types of dental emergencies?

There are three main types of dental emergencies handled by the multidisciplinary team at Sana Oris.

  • The sharp pain Persistent pain despite taking pain medication is the most common emergency.
This is the traditional "toothache," which can have two main causes:

    • pulpitis, an inflammation of the inside of the tooth, the pulp, located in the root canal.
    • Soft tissue abscess (gums, alveolar bone), which may present associated risks.
  • Dental trauma refers to damage to the teeth caused by an impact, most often affecting the front teeth, which are more exposed. It should be noted that the damage may also affect other parts of the mouth: bones, gums, oral mucosa, etc.
  • Hemorrhage is uninterrupted bleeding from the teeth, most often after tooth extraction.

What to do in case of a dental emergency?

In case of a dental emergency during the day, you can contact us by phone at 01 82 73 14 00. Our reception staff is trained to assess the severity of the emergency by asking a few questions about the nature of your symptoms and the characteristics of the pain you are experiencing.

Our priority will be to provide you with emergency first aid in order to limit any complications and preserve your teeth as much as possible, while taking care of your pain and stress with the utmost attention.

Outside of opening hours, you should contact the nearest emergency dental or stomatology service.

What to do for toothache (dental abscess and pulpitis)?

1 – While waiting for your appointment, you can take a painkiller already prescribed by a healthcare professional, such as paracetamol or paracetamol with codeine.

In addition, applying external cold to an abscess can also relieve pain.

However, aspirin and ibuprofen should be avoided, as they can increase the risk of bleeding.

Taking a broad-spectrum antibiotic, on the other hand, is only recommended on medical advice.

2 - Once you arrive, your Sana Oris practitioner will immediately perform a clinical examination and X-ray assessment, which will enable them to make an accurate diagnosis of the situation straight away.

  • For pulpitis, a pulpotomy will be performed by removing the sensitive tissue inside the tooth, particularly the nerve structures, before placing a temporary filling.
Once the lesions have stabilized, a specific endodontic treatment such as root canal therapy can be performed.
It should be noted that the Sana Oris dental clinic has an exclusive endodontic specialist dedicated to the most complex cases.
  • For a dental abscess, the treatment protocol will depend on the type of abscess (periapical or periodontal) and its stage of development. In both cases, drainage of the abscess will be necessary and may be accompanied by root canal treatment (devitalization) or even extraction of the tooth.
Once initial treatment has been provided, antibiotic treatment may also be recommended, as well as in-depth periodontal treatment.

Thanks to its five specialists dedicated exclusively to periodontology, including Dr. Kohen, a pioneer in this field in France, the Sana Oris team has extensive expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of infections of the soft and hard tissues of the mouth.

What should you do in the event of dental trauma or trauma to a prosthesis?

Once you arrive, your Sana Oris specialist will ask you some questions, followed by a complete examination of your mouth and an X-ray, which will enable them to make an accurate diagnosis. Depending on the nature of the lesion and its consequences, several situations may arise:

  • If the dental pulp is not affected, it will be possible to reattach the broken piece or reconstruct the tooth using a specific composite resin. Please note that thanks to our in-house laboratory, we guarantee a prosthesis made in France, produced as quickly as possible for optimal aesthetic results.
  • If the dental pulp is affected, it is common to consider root canal treatment and the subsequent fitting of a dental prosthesis.
  • If the root of the tooth is affected, it is usually necessary to extract the tooth before considering the placement of a complete denture.
  • If the impact affects a prosthesis or orthodontic device, a follow-up consultation should be considered, but it is not as urgent. Particular attention should be paid to the integrity of the gums.
It is also important to carefully check the integrity of the gums.

For each of these situations, additional care will be required and will be covered by a detailed, customized estimate, which your practitioner will provide to you along with a report of the emergency care provided.

How can you prevent toothache?

Dental infections are often caused by poor hygiene and prevention.

A significant proportion of abscesses and pulpitis are found in patients who are afraid of the dentist, leading them to neglect their annual preventive check-ups. However, it is these regular dental examinations that often prevent periodontal disease, which can develop into abscesses, or dental disease, which can develop into pulpitis.

We offer customized prevention protocols tailored to your age and the condition of your teeth, all in a calm and trusting environment. During this appointment, each patient can benefit from our exclusive expertise in periodontics and endodontics.
