Sensitive teeth: causes and treatments | Sana Oris Dental Clinic, Paris 8

Sensitive teeth

When external factors (heat, cold, acid, sugar) cause brief, intense pain without any decay being involved, this is referred to as tooth sensitivity.

The different causes of tooth sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity results from exposure of the tubules, tiny channels that run through the dentin (the middle layer of the tooth), to external aggressions. Normally, tooth enamel and cementum protect the tubules, but certain factors can limit their protective action, such as:

  • thinning of the enamel caused by wear and tear;
  • gum recession
  • aggressive brushing
  • excessive consumption of acidic foods
  • tooth loosening
  • a broken tooth
  • teeth grinding
  • exposure of a tooth root

Symptoms of a sensitive tooth

The most common symptoms of tooth sensitivity are as follows:

  • Sensitivity to hot or cold foods
  • Pain when exposed to cold air
  • Pain associated with consuming acidic or sugary foods
  • Pain associated with breathing cold air (e.g., jogging in winter)

How can I reduce my tooth sensitivity?

To avoid brushing too aggressively, it is advisable to use a soft toothbrush and not to press too hard.

Certain products, such as specific toothpaste or mouthwash, may be recommended by your dentist. It is advisable to consult your healthcare professional regularly, who will suggest the appropriate treatment. In some cases, this may involve root canal treatment or gum grafting.

Expected results after treatment

Tooth sensitivity can be reduced by adjusting your brushing technique and choosing the right toothbrush. Various procedures performed by your dentist can also significantly reduce tooth sensitivity.

The cost of dental care: combating tooth sensitivity

Depending on the proposed treatment, your dentist and their team will inform you of the cost of treating tooth sensitivity after an initial consultation.
