Tooth sensitivity results from exposure of the tubules, tiny channels that run through the dentin (the middle layer of the tooth), to external aggressions. Normally, tooth enamel and cementum protect the tubules, but certain factors can limit their protective action, such as:
- thinning of the enamel caused by wear and tear;
- gum recession
- aggressive brushing
- excessive consumption of acidic foods
- tooth loosening
- a broken tooth
- teeth grinding
- exposure of a tooth root
